Anne Hathaway Wanted Julie Andrews Back for 'Princess Diaries 3'—Andrews Isn't Having It
The OG Queen Clarissa ain't returning, and Anne Hathaway tried everything to make it happen.

Anne Hathaway's been real about wanting Julie Andrews back for the third installment of The Princess Diaries—she even put in serious work trying to convince the legendary actor to return. But Andrews made it clear: this one's not for her.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Andrews explained she doesn't think she should be part of the new film. No disrespect to Hathaway's pitch, but the queen had her reasons and stuck to them. It's the kind of boundary-setting that makes sense—Andrews created something iconic in those first two movies, and sometimes the right move is knowing when to let the younger generation carry the torch.
This doesn't kill the project or anything. Hathaway's still locked in, and the Princess Diaries universe has enough going on to move forward. But losing that connective tissue between generations stings a little. Andrews' Clarissa was part of what made those films work, and her absence will definitely be felt when this drops.
The question now: can Princess Diaries 3 find its own energy without that lineage, or does it just become another legacy sequel going through the motions?
