Anthropic Getting Sued Over Elvis in Their AI Training Data
The King's catalog allegedly used without permission to teach machines how to understand music.

Here's a lawsuit that hits different: Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, is getting sued for allegedly using 274 Elvis Presley songs to train their AI models without clearance. We're talking major classics—"Can't Help Falling in Love," "A Little Less Conversation," "Don't Be Cruel"—all allegedly swept into the machine learning pile.
The suit went down Friday, and it's part of a bigger conversation happening right now: what counts as fair use when tech companies are training AI on massive amounts of copyrighted material? Music catalogs, books, images—it's all in the mix. The difference here is that Elvis's estate isn't playing around, and neither should anyone else whose work got fed into these systems without consent.
Anthropically's probably got a legal team ready to argue fair use doctrine and transformative purpose, the usual playbook. But this one's gonna matter because if artists and rights holders start winning these cases, it could actually change how AI companies operate—no more just grabbing everything and asking questions later.
The King deserves better than that, and frankly, so do the rest of us.
