BTS Just Killed the Grammys' 'Asian Pop' Category Before It Even Started

The Recording Academy wanted to make Asian pop its own thing at the Grammys. BTS had other ideas.

The Recording Academy thought they were doing something progressive by carving out a dedicated category for Asian pop music at the 2027 Grammy Awards. Turns out the biggest group on the planet wasn't checking for it.

BTS decided not to submit for the new category, and that one move has Grammy bosses scrambling to rethink the whole thing. When your flagship act—the one that put Asian pop on the global map in the first place—says "nah," it's a sign your category might be missing the point.

Here's the thing: there's a real conversation to be had about recognition and representation at the Grammys. But there's also a difference between celebrating a genre and cordoning it off. Some artists want to compete in the same space as everybody else. Some see a separate category as a step forward. Others see it as a box.

BTS choosing to sit it out is saying something loud about what they expect from an institution like the Grammys—and it's forcing the Recording Academy to listen. Whether this sparks real change or just shuffles the deck remains to be seen, but the message is clear: you can't force legacy into a category it doesn't want to fit.
