Derek Tsang Tapped to Direct 'Group 41' DEA Series
The 3 Body Problem director is stepping into prestige true-crime drama with a story about the DEA's first Asian-American unit.

Derek Tsang, who brought the sci-fi intensity to Netflix's 3 Body Problem and earned acclaim for Better Days, is signing on to direct and executive produce Group 41—a new limited series diving into the real history of the DEA's first Asian-American narcotics squad.
The project is coming together at Salty Pictures, the production company behind Shadow, and just got announced at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest in Taipei. It's a 10-episode run that'll blend procedural crime storytelling with the specific cultural lens of the agents who built that unit from scratch.
Tsang's got the pedigree for this kind of thing—he knows how to balance intimate character work with bigger institutional stakes. Bringing an Asian-American creative voice to a story about Asian-American agents breaking barriers in federal law enforcement feels like the right move, not a checkbox.
This is the kind of prestige TV that doesn't get made often enough. Depending on where it lands, Group 41 could be something real.
