GWAR's Chuck Varga, the Sexecutioner, Dead at 68
A founding architect of metal's most unhinged live experience is gone.

Chuck Varga, who helped build GWAR into one of the most visually extreme and uncompromising acts in heavy metal history, has died at 68 after a cancer battle. Varga was the man behind the Sexecutioner—one of the band's most iconic grotesque characters—a role he held for nearly 40 years.
GWAR was never about subtlety. From day one, the band leaned into shock, gore, and theatrical absurdity as core creative tools. Varga's Sexecutioner became a cornerstone of that vision—a character that helped define what a GWAR show actually was. Love them or hate them, the band's commitment to the bit was absolute, and Varga was instrumental in that.
There's something to respect about an artist who commits that deeply to a vision, regardless of how many people found it offensive or ridiculous. GWAR's whole existence was built on the idea that metal doesn't have to apologize. Varga lived that philosophy on stage for four decades.
The metal community has lost someone who understood that shock and artistry aren't mutually exclusive—they're just tools in the right hands.
