J.A. Bayona Explores Life After Survival in New Netflix Doc Series

The director behind 'Society of the Snow' is diving deeper into the Andes crash story—but this time, it's about what came next.

J.A. Bayona isn't done with the 1972 Andes plane crash. The Spanish director—who turned the disaster into last year's acclaimed film "Society of the Snow"—just premiered a three-part Netflix documentary called "Beyond Society" at San Sebastián Film Festival that shifts focus to the aftermath.

Where his movie centered on survival, this series (co-created with writer Carlos Torres) examines what actually happened when those survivors returned home to Uruguay. How do you live after something like that? How does a community process it? How do families move forward? That's the territory this one's exploring.

Bayona's already proven he can wrestle with impossible human situations—"The Impossible," "A Monster Calls"—so having him shepherd this particular story feels right. He knows how to find the weight in trauma without turning it into spectacle. This isn't a cheap recount; it's a real look at the long shadow survival casts.

"Beyond Society" hit the festival circuit in late September, so Netflix will likely roll it out soon. If you've been thinking about the Andes crash story since the film dropped, this is the natural next chapter.
