John Anderson, Country Legend With That Unmistakable Rasp, Dead at 71
A true original leaves the building.

John Anderson, the country singer whose voice was impossible to mistake and whose catalog sat right at the crossroads of traditional country and commercial appeal, has passed away at 71.
Anderson had the kind of instrument that cut through—that gravelly, soulful delivery that made even a straightforward country song feel lived-in and real. He wasn't trying to be precious about it. Songs like "Swingin'," "Straight Tequila Night," and "Seminole Wind" proved he could write and sing about real life without losing the country audience in the process. That's harder than it sounds.
The guy was prolific, earned his place in the Country Music Hall of Fame, and did it by staying himself. No reinvention every few years, no chasing trends. Just a craftsman who understood his lane and owned it.
Country music lost a serious one.
