Martin McDonagh Says 'Wild Horse Nine' Is His Most Political Stance Yet
The Irish filmmaker is done playing it safe—and he wants other artists to do the same.

Martin McDonagh's got something to say, and he's not holding back anymore. At the Zurich Film Festival, the filmmaker made it clear that his latest project "Wild Horse Nine" represents a shift in his approach—one that puts ideology front and center instead of hiding behind artistic ambiguity.
"This is probably my most political film," McDonagh said, emphasizing how energized he is about releasing what he called a "monster" into the world. He's critiquing the current landscape, too: there's "too much artistic neutrality" happening right now, he argues. Too many artists saying nothing when they could be saying something.
For a director known for dark comedy, moral complexity, and letting audiences sit uncomfortable—which is basically his whole thing—this is a notable pivot. McDonagh's been deliberate about creating space for messy characters and difficult situations without spelling out what we're supposed to think. But with "Wild Horse Nine," he's apparently ready to be more direct.
Whether that means the film loses some of its layered appeal or gains clarity is something we'll find out. Either way, the guy's tired of the fence.
