Melissa Barrera on the Macklemore Effect: 'That's the Solidarity I Didn't Get'

The actress fired from Scream for Gaza posts speaks on musicians walking away from Ed Sheeran over Macklemore.

Melissa Barrera's still thinking about what it means when people actually ride for each other.

Back in 2023, Barrera got dropped from the Scream franchise after posting about the Gaza conflict on social media. Brutal, public, and the industry largely moved on without her. Now she's watching Macklemore get cut from Ed Sheeran's tour for his own pro-Palestine stance — and seeing artists like Finneas choose to walk rather than stay quiet.

Respect vs. Silence

Barrera called the response "beautiful," which is a word heavy with what wasn't there for her. When you're fired, the solidarity usually doesn't show up. People protect their check. But watching musicians say "nah, not if my guy's getting blackballed" — that landed different.

She wasn't bitter about it, just real. The difference between being left alone and being backed up is everything in a moment like that. It's the difference between weathering the storm solo versus knowing somebody sees what happened to you and decides to make noise about it.

Whether you agree with everyone's politics here or not, Barrera's point is simpler: solidarity's rare in this business. When it shows up, it shows up. And when it doesn't, you remember that too.
