National Geographic Doubles Down on Documentaries With New Continental Franchise

While streaming services chase viral moments, Nat Geo is betting big on long-form storytelling.

National Geographic just launched Africa Earth's Wild Home, a seven-part documentary series that took four years to produce and involved over 50 people on the ground. It's not a quick cash grab or a limited run—it's the opening chapter of a multi-year franchise that'll systematically document the planet, continent by continent.

Here's what stands out: most major media companies have already cut loose their documentary budgets, treating them like luxury items in a recession. Nat Geo is doing the opposite. They're investing real time and real money into the kind of work that doesn't trend on TikTok but actually says something.

The scale alone matters. Four years for one series means patience, proper fieldwork, no shortcuts. That's a different economy than what dominates streaming right now—one where depth and craft still count for something.

If they execute, this could reset expectations around what natural history television can be. If it flops, it'll probably be the last time a major company takes that kind of swing. Either way, it's worth paying attention to.
