Netflix Betting Big on 'Lonesome Dove' Remake With 'East of Eden' Team
Another classic novel gets the prestige TV treatment — and Netflix is bringing serious talent to the table.

Netflix is dusting off Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove for a new series adaptation, tapping Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart to helm the project. That's the same duo who ran the recent East of Eden limited series, so there's some real pedigree here.
For those not up on it: the original 1989 CBS miniseries was a genuine cultural moment, the kind of Western that actually stuck around in people's heads. That's a high bar. McMurtry's novel is dense and sprawling, full of characters that demand real acting chops. Kazan and Stuart proved they could handle that kind of material with East of Eden, so it's not a wild swing to put them on this.
Netflix clearly wants to position this as must-see TV — not just another streaming Western. Whether audiences are hungry for another Lonesome Dove in 2024 is a different question. The Western's popularity cycles in and out. Right now, there's definitely some momentum with prestige takes on the genre.
This could be the rare remake that actually justifies its existence, or it could end up being one of those expensive swings that disappears into the scroll. Either way, the team in place knows how to build a story around complex characters.
