New Doc Puts Figure Skating Champion Under the Microscope

There's a certain magic in watching someone master their craft at the highest level—but also a cost that doesn't always make it to the highlight reel. That's the space Up Again lives in. Eliška Andršová Cílková's first feature-length documentary follows Barbora Vránková, a three-time Czech figure skating champion, as she navigates the pressure, discipline, and personal stakes that come with competing at that level.

The film's already making waves on the festival circuit after its premiere at Ji.hlava Doc Fest, and it's heading to HBO Max across Europe soon. What makes this feel different from your standard sports doc is the access—Cílková gets you close enough to feel the weight of it all, not just see the triple axels.

It's the kind of story that reminds you every athlete's got a whole world of sacrifice and doubt running parallel to their wins. Worth your time if you care about the real human side of competition.
