Resident Evil Finally Gets It Right—And the Box Office Is Listening

Zach Cregger's reboot is breaking the curse that's plagued every RE movie adaptation.

For real this time: Resident Evil is actually good. That's not hyperbole—this is legitimately the first film in the franchise to move the needle with critics, which honestly says everything you need to know about how badly Hollywood had been fumbling this IP.

Zach Cregger stepped in to direct, and the move's paying off. Austin Abrams carries the flick, and word is the numbers are looking solid at the box office. When a video game adaptation gets both respect from the critical side and seats in the theater, that's the kind of rare W that needs acknowledging.

The Resident Evil curse ran deep—decades of misses, wrong casting, tone-deaf scripts. This one apparently figured out what the fans actually wanted instead of making something that just borrowed the name. Whether it's respect for the source material, smarter storytelling, or just catching lightning in a bottle, Cregger's version is doing what none of the others could.

This matters beyond just one horror film. If Sony's got a formula that works for game-to-screen adaptations, that changes everything for how they handle their catalog moving forward.
