Next month, Spotify's rolling out labels for what they're calling "AI personas"—basically fake artists that exist only as AI-generated profiles dropping AI-made music. The move is straightforward: they're asking anyone putting out music that way to self-report, but they're also building monitoring tools to catch people who don't.

This is Spotify's way of trying to keep the platform honest as AI music tools get easier to use and cheaper to deploy. Right now, nothing's stopping someone from creating a ghost artist, running beats through a voice generator, and flooding Spotify with tracks—which has already started happening. The labeling system is supposed to make that visible instead of letting it blend in with real creators.

The self-declaration angle is interesting though. Spotify's banking on artists being upfront about it, but we know how that usually goes. That's why they're also monitoring for the ones who won't.
