Susan Sarandon, Hannah Einbinder Arrested at UN Netanyahu Protest

Two Hollywood names got detained while demonstrating against the Israeli PM's UN address.

Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder ended up in custody this week during a protest outside the United Nations in New York. Actor Caleb Hearon was there too. The demonstration happened as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to speak at the General Assembly—a high-security moment in Manhattan.

Nearly 100 people were taken into custody that day. The specifics of the charges and what went down aren't the point here; what matters is that these folks showed up to voice their opposition, knowing full well the NYPD would be locked and loaded.

Sarandon's been vocal about Palestinian rights for years. Einbinder, known for her HBO comedy, has used her platform to speak on the issue too. When major political figures step up to speak at the UN, you get crowds—and you get arrests. That's the formula.

Whether you agree with the protest or not, this is what activism looks like in 2024: celebrities and everyday people willing to risk a night in custody to make noise about foreign policy. The real conversation happens after—when people actually pay attention to why folks are out there in the first place.
