HBO Max Taps Frank Spotnitz to Mentor European Writers Program
The streaming giant is investing in homegrown storytelling across Europe with help from a legendary TV architect.

HBO Max is making a real push to develop original series rooted in European culture and talent. The platform just selected 12 European writers for its Script Engine program, a mentorship initiative designed to help creators develop pitchable projects from the ground up.
Frank Spotnitz — the veteran showrunner behind The X-Files and The Man in the High Castle — is leading the mentorship. That's a serious get. Spotnitz has spent decades building shows that blend prestige storytelling with mass appeal, so having him guide emerging European writers through the development process carries real weight.
The program culminates in November with writers pitching their work directly to HBO Max decision-makers. It's a smart model: find regional talent early, invest in their voices, and build a pipeline of original content that actually reflects the markets you're trying to reach.
Streaming wars are won on content depth, not just volume. Programs like this signal that HBO Max isn't just looking for American-made exports — they're betting on writers who know their own worlds intimately.
