James Austin Johnson's Trump Crashes SNL U.K., Roasts the Whole Situation

JAJ brought his Trump impression overseas for a cold open that had everybody in on the joke.

James Austin Johnson's Trump impression is officially international now. The SNL cast member shipped his take on the former president straight to Britain for Saturday's U.K. edition of the show, rolling up unannounced into a sketch about the Prime Minister meeting with Ukraine's President Zelenskyy.

The bit played on what you'd expect: Trump showing up, cracking on the setup, asking why they couldn't get a British impressionist to handle the material themselves. Which is funny because JAJ is the guy—he's the one carrying that impression on U.S. television week in and week out. Having him pop in on the U.K. version and essentially break the fourth wall about it adds another layer.

It's the kind of cross-Atlantic comedy flex that only works when you've got someone as locked-in with a character as Johnson is. He's not just doing a voice; he's got the mannerisms, the timing, the whole worldview down to the point where him just existing in a sketch becomes the joke.

SNL U.K. leaning on the American cast's biggest impression for their launch moment says something about where the power sits in sketch comedy right now.
