Netflix's Matthew Perry Doc Hits Different—But Stretches Thin
Mary Robertson's three-part series lets people who knew Matthew Perry speak their truth. Just wish it didn't take so long.

Netflix dropped The One About Matthew Perry and it's the kind of documentary that works best in short bursts. Director Mary Robertson lined up his sister Mia, friends, exes, and people he worked with to talk about who Perry really was—the comedy genius and the guy battling real demons.
That's where the power lives: in the actual conversations. When the people closest to him are speaking, you feel the weight of what they lost and what they're still processing. But here's the thing—three episodes is a lot of real estate to fill, and it shows. The doc has heart, no question. It's sincere. But it also pads things out when a tighter, sharper cut might've hit harder.
The formula is familiar: clips, talking heads, reflection on the good times and the struggle. Nothing wrong with that, but The One About Matthew Perry doesn't quite break the mold enough to justify every minute it asks you to sit with it. Still, if you were invested in Perry or just want to hear from the people who actually knew him—not the myth, but the man—it's worth the time.
