PRS for Music Links Up with Soundtrack to Tighten Payout Data

UK's biggest collecting society is hunting better intel on who's actually playing what.

PRS for Music just inked a deal with Soundtrack—a B2B music supplier—to sharpen up how they track public performances and divvy out money to artists and rights holders. It's another move in the society's longer push to make sure payouts actually match reality instead of guessing games.

The collecting society's been working on this accuracy problem for a minute now. Getting solid data on who played what where is messy—venues, bars, gyms, all kinds of spaces with sound systems. Soundtrack's got intel on that world, so the partnership makes sense as a way to close gaps in what PRS currently sees.

This stuff matters different ways. For smaller artists who might not see checks anyway, better tracking could mean actual money hits their accounts. For venues and the music industry overall, tighter data means the system works closer to how it's supposed to. Nobody's pretending this solves everything overnight, but it's the kind of unsexy infrastructure work that keeps the whole machine from breaking down.

It's part of a bigger shift in how collecting societies operate—leaning harder on tech and data partnerships to actually know what's happening with music instead of working off incomplete info.
