Talking Heads Getting the Coffee Table Treatment With 'New Feeling'

Four decades later, the New York art-rock legends are finally telling their own story—together.

Talking Heads are dropping an authorized book next May called New Feeling, and this is the first time all four members have signed off on a career retrospective together. That's a big deal for a band that's been through as much creative friction and personal distance as these guys.

The coffee table book format makes sense for a group that was always about the look as much as the sound—David Byrne's twitchy stage presence, the stark post-punk aesthetic, those oversized suits. But more than just a photo collection, this is a chance for the members to actually sit down and document what went down from their formation through everything that followed.

Talking Heads never officially broke up, but they haven't been a regular touring entity in years. A project like this doesn't just happen because a label wants to move books. The fact that Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Jerry Harrison, and Chris Frantz all got on board suggests there's some peace made and stories worth telling from the inside.

May arrival means holiday gift lists are about to get interesting for art-rock heads and design nerds alike.
