Chin & Vasarhelyi Go Back to the Mountain With 'Everest: The Other Side'
The 'Free Solo' filmmakers return to extreme sports docs—this time tracking skiers pushing Everest to another limit.

So the Oscar-winning duo behind Free Solo is back in the thin air business. Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi just dropped Everest: The Other Side on National Geographic, and it's exactly what you'd expect from them at this point: beautiful, tense, and deeply committed to capturing people who operate on a different plane than the rest of us.
This time around, instead of just climbing the world's tallest mountain, these athletes are skiing down it. Yeah. The doc zeros in on the triumph and the tragedy that comes with that kind of ambition—the rush of summiting, the horror when things go wrong, all of it. Nat Geo's putting it out there, which means it'll get in front of serious audiences.
The review notes it's "guiltily compelling," which is fair. There's always something uncomfortable about watching people chase that edge, especially when the stakes are life and death. But that's also why Chin and Vasarhelyi keep making these things—they know how to make you feel that tension without turning it into spectacle.
If you've been sleeping on their work, or if you're just looking for a documentary that won't bore you, this one's worth your attention.
